Did everyone have a good week? In Korea, the monsoon season has officially started, so many days begin with a gloomy sky every morning. Summers in Korea are so incredibly humid that even just stepping outside for a moment makes you sweat bullets, like you’re inside a jjimjilbang. I used to be fine walking around without a water bottle, but lately, it’s been so hot that I get severely thirsty whenever I go out, forcing me to hop into a cafe. Feeling like I might collapse from dehydration, I ordered a large water bottle online. Make sure to stay safe out there, and don’t forget to always look after both your physical and mental health.

선생님이 추천하는 고전 영화

많은 학생이 요즘 스트리밍 서비스로 최신 한국 드라마나 영화를 많이 보고 있어요. 한국어 선생님으로서 조금 더 오래된 한국 영화도 접해봤으면 좋겠다고 생각해서 고전 영화 중 하나인 <소나기>를 추천하고 싶어요. 사실 ‘엠마’라는 학생과 지난 수업 시간에 한국 영화에 대해 이야기를 나누다가 제가 추천해 준 영화인데, 정말 명작이랍니다. 저는 그 영화의 대표 삽입곡인 <산골 소년의 사랑 이야기>만 들어도 눈물이 주르륵 나요. 몇몇 학생분들도 알다시피 저는 시골에서 태어나고 자랐거든요. 그래서 이 노래만 들으면 무더운 여름철, 풀내음 가득한 시골 냇가가 자연스레 떠올라요. 영화를 찾아보다가 마침 엄청나게 흥행한 드라마 <폭삭 속았수다>에 출연한 아이유와 박보검이 이 노래를 커버한 무대 영상이 있어서 아래에 넣어두었어요. 영상과 함께 그 시절의 감성을 느껴보세요!

Many students these days are watching a lot of recent Korean dramas and movies on streaming services. As a Korean language teacher, I’ve hoped that you could also experience some older Korean cinema, which is why I’d like to recommend a classic film called ‘The Shower’ (Sonagi). I actually recommended this to Emma during our last class while we were chatting about Korean movies.

Even just hearing its signature song, ‘A Mountain Boy’s Love Story,’ brings tears to my eyes. As some of you may know, I was born and raised in the countryside. Whenever I listen to this song, it evokes memories of countryside streams and the fresh scent of grass on a hot summer day.

While looking up the movie, I happened to find a video of IU and Park Bo-gum, who starred in the hit drama ‘When Life Gives You Tangerines,’ covering this very song! I’ve included the link above, so I hope you enjoy the video and feel the nostalgic vibe of those days!

This week’s ‘FSM’ (Frequently Seen Mistakes)

While flipping through the notebook I keep next to me during class, I found the perfect topic for us to cover this week: the difference between ‘이’ and ‘이번’.

As you know, the word ‘이’ means ‘this,’ but it also happens to mean ‘two’ in Sino-Korean numbers. Because of this overlap, a lot of students mistakenly use ‘이’ when they actually need to use ‘이번’. One of the examples is saying 이주 instead of 이번주.

So, what exactly does ‘이번’ mean? It literally translates to ‘this time.’ This means whenever you are using a time-related word to talk about the current week, month, or cycle, ‘이번’ is the word you want. Otherwise, the person listening might easily misunderstand you and think you’re talking about ‘two’ of something!

1. 이번 = This time (Exclusively for Time)

이번 specifically means "this time" or "this turn." It combines 이 (this) with 번 (time/turn). You use it when talking about events, schedules, or occurrences happening in the current time frame (like this week or this month).

• 이번 주 (This week)

• 이번 달 (This month)

• 이번 일요일 (This Sunday)

• 이번 학기 (This semester)

Example:

A: 이번 주말에 시간 있어요? (Do you have time this weekend?)

B: 아니요, 다음주까지 바쁠 거 같아요. (No, I think I'll be busy until next week.)

2. 이 = This (For General Objects, Places, and People)

On the other hand, when you are pointing at visible, physical things like objects, locations, or people, you use 이. This functions exactly like “this” in English.

• 이 책 (This book)

• 이 사람 (This person)

• 이 것 → 이거 (This thing)

Example:

A: 이 식당은 점심시간에 항상 사람들이 줄서서 기다리고 있어요. (There is always a line of people waiting at this restaurant during lunchtime.)

B: 동네 맛집이에요? 우리도 다음번에 가볼까요? (Is it a local hot spot (famous local restaurant)? Shall we check it out next time, too?)

The summer vacation season is just around the corner! Do you have any vacation plans yet? Or maybe you’ve already been? I’d been saying I should plan something since the beginning of this year, but I ended up getting selected for a project I applied for! So, for the next three months, I think I’ll be quite busy with interviews and writing manuscripts. Because of that, I’m thinking of planning a trip for the fall, a little later than everyone else.
